Artist Statement

        In my creative work I employ a variety of mediums including pastel, pencil, watercolors, acrylics, oils, hardshell gourds, and woods.  The majority of my work incorporates pastels.  Pastels allow me to combine elements of drawing with the introduction of color and tone.  I enjoy the control of drawing yet the versitality of the various techniques in application that pastels afford.  The layers of both tones and strokes in pastel provide a richness of depth and detail that causes viewers to pause and study.
       My work generally involves high detail and realism, focusing on wildlife or nature themes.  Animals display a naturalness that is pure and uncontrived.  Their expressions and actions can be emotionally powerful and captivating, pulling the viewer in for a closer examination.  I strive for this connection between subject and viewer.  We need to slow down from the hectic pace of life and enjoy the journey we are on and the scenery around us.  Beauty and wonder are in the large and small of creation.  The minute nuances and details are as significant as the grand and obvious.  Take time to notice and contemplate the worlds around us.
        In addition to frameable artwork, I am involved in mural and decorative painting in homes and businesses.  This includes faux finishes and unique wall treatments that enhance our living spaces and environments.  This custom art venue is very satisfying for me as an artist and brings me in touch with a variety of interesting individuals.
     The hardshell gourd art is another avenue that is captivating to me.  The natural qualities of the gourd, including the unique shape and color characteristics, speak of the uniqueness in and around all of us every day.  They have an earthy attraction for me, and my creative treatments with the gourds stay true to this nature.  I can woodburn, carve, and stain them in an infinite variety of ways.
        Connecting and communicating with others is central to an artist.  I am continually seeking ways to speak to others through my artwork, drawing attention to realities that are larger and more significant than myself.  I view my art as a means to an end - the end being a greater awareness that the world around us, both in the great and the small, speaks of the universal truths and reality of God the Creator.  The created world is one avenue that God uses to speak to us that He is God and desires to be in relationship with us.  Nothing is too large or too small to concern Him.  Maybe you don't speak to God, nevertheless, He speaks to you.  My desire is that You may hear and respond to the Great Creator as He guides my creative efforts.

                                                   But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
                                                    or the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
                                                     or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
                                                          or let the fish of the sea inform you.
                                                              Which of these does not know
                                                       that the hand of the Lord has done this?
                                                                             Job 12: 7-9
